For this year’s Lust List Atlanta, we decided to run with three variations of the cover. These are zoned covers which means readers will see the three covers in different areas throughout the city of Atlanta. Creatively, they share the same design approach and same headline treatment to build the complete series. I think it’s a very cool way to be creative in regards to distribution this way – and Lust List lends itself nicely to this.

Charlotte’s Lust List featured one of the winners of this year’s ladies-only edition. The cover design intentionally plays off beauty magazines with soft colors and the same vibe was also carried into the inside cover package that was executed by Valery. It makes for a perfect match of inside & outside even though two different designers worked on it.

Darrow Montgomery, the Washington City Paper’s staff photographer, is really a gem. His work makes my job incredibly easy, because with art like this, how can this cover not work?

This cover story was designed for the annual Urban Explorer’s Handbook for Charlotte. The outside cover idea was to portray two characters in the Battle of the Hoods. The inside cover package showcased various neighborhoods around Charlotte. While the neighborhoods are all unique, the design ties them all together.

This cover was designed by using three original character illustrations done by artists Scott Sanders and Matt Tinsley, who created promotional materials for the Decatur Book Festival. We got permission to use the characters to come up with our own photo illustration. I used a stock image background as a landscape for the characters, and placed them to create a scene. The overall cover was made to look like a graphic novel to match the Book Festival theme.
